A Carrot a Day Keeps Lung Cancer Away |
|
Carrots definitely deserve their membership in the super foods club. Not only do they provide your body with essential nutrients that keep your skin and cell tissue healthy, they are also packed with antioxidants, which are your body's prime weapons for fighting off heart disease and preventing cancer.
In fact, if you have a family history of cancer, be doubly sure to include carrots in your diet to reduce your risk of developing
cancer.
Lung Cancer - 50% reduction of risk A Harvard University clinical study that tracked over 100,000 individual over 10 years found that people who ate the most amount of carotene (the active compound in carrots) and lycopene (the cancer fighting compound in tomatoes) had a significantly lower risk of developing lung cancer.
According to Drs Murray and Pizzorno in The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods , a high intake of carrots can also reduce the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer by 20%. The risk of the following cancers is also slashed in half by a diet high in carotene: - cervical cancer - bladder cancer - prostate cancer - colon cancer - cancer of the larynx and - esophageal cancer
A handful of carrots (approximately 50g or 2oz) a day will provide you with all the carotene you need to fight off cancer and heart disease.
Tip: To get the most out of your carrots, steam them for a few minutes and add a dollop of butter or olive oil. Boiling will destroy the nutrients and consuming them raw will make it harder for your body to extract all the goodness. Beta carotene is a fat soluble vitamin, so adding the butter or olive oil will help your body absorb it more easily.
